Collage Kit

As part of Light Night Worcester, we invited artist and designer Mark Murphy to create a collage-making resource for schools, colleges, sixth forms and young people at home.

Inside the Collage Kit you will find a brief introduction to collage as an art form, a step-by-step guide, and lots of images to get you started.

You don’t need to be a skilled or experienced artist to create a beautiful and thought provoking collage.

About Mark Murphy

Mark Murphy is an artist and designer based in Birmingham. He uses a range of weird and wonderful vintage prints from the last 75 years to create poignant, challenging and sometimes deliberately humorous collages.

Watch this video to hear from Mark himself about his process.

Mark makes his collages by hand and sometimes on a computer; playing with different arrangements of cut out images and with perspective (making small things big, and big things small). The end result can be fantastical, thought-provoking and often surprising.

Mark’s new series of collage works, ‘Remember the Future’ for Light Night 2021, remixes what he calls “vintage images of future visions”, and looks back to see how people in the past imagined what the future might be like.

Whether you use the Collage Kit at home or in school, we want to see your collages.

We’d love to see your finished collages, inspired by this collage kit, so that we can include them in our online gallery as part of Light Night Worcester, running from 19 – 21 October 2021.

To do this, simply:

1. Take individual photographs of each collage, ensuring each one is clearly labelled with the following details before you take the photo:

– Pupil name and year

– School name

(Please only share details that you are happy to be publicly available online)

2. Save each photograph to your computer as an individual jpeg file

3. Name each separate jpeg file with your school name and the name of the pupil who created that collage (e.g. Woodfield_School_Joe_Bloggs.jpeg)

4. Upload jpegs to our  Online Collage Gallery: Submission Space  by Sunday 10 October 2021. Please note, when you click this link you will see an upload request from Joanna Freeman.

You can contact Joanna Freeman for more information on [email protected], or visit to learn more about Light Night Worcester and see the online collage gallery during the festival.

The Collage Artwork Gallery

Students from across the county of Worcestershire will be able to use our Collage Kit to create some of their own collages, and have their work hosted in our online Gallery. Below are some examples of Mark Murphy’s own collage work to give you an idea.
